Description

RARE mid – 1970s Cincinnati Reds uniform (jersey and pants) belonging to and worn by former professional baseball player and renowned baseball scout Elmer Gray (1923-2014). After his playing career (1946-=1950) playing with the Fulton Bulldogs, Fulton Chicks, Aberdeen Pheasants, Springfield Browns and the Gloversville-Johnstown Glovers; Gray swerved as a scout for more than 62 years – serving with the St. Louis Browns, Baltimore Orioles and the Cincinnati Reds and later served as the Pittsburgh Pirates Scouting Director from 1984 to 1989. Gray is noted for his work drafting and signing such baseball talent as Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Sr., Tim Wakefield, Jeff King, Moises Alou, Orlando Merced and Stan Belinda. In 1992 Elmer Gray was distinguished with being named “Scout of the Year.”
The jersey bares the Wilson manufacturers size tag “42” on the left front tail. Red tackle twill lettering spells the team “CINCINNATI” with uniform number “27” on front and uniform number “27” with the name “GRAY” on back. The sleeves and collar are accented in red and white. The rarely seen game pants worn by Gray accompany the jersey and are sized “36” on the Wilson manufacturers label sewn on the inside back red and white waistband. Zipper fly and two snap button closure on the front of the waist with drawstring tightening on the inside of the waistband. Excellent condition, light soiling on the upper back left shoulder. Evidence of wear and laundry care. It may not be the ,000 to ,000 value realized by Hall of Famer jersey’s from the era such as that belonging to and worn by Johnny Bench, but it represents the style of the era well, with equal rarity.
