    Description

This is for an original 1987 San Diego Padres jersey which was worn by multi position player Bip Roberts. Bip was a first round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1982 and quickly moved up the ladder by stealing 90 bases in his first two years in the clubs farm system. Bip was then taken by the Padres from the Pirates in the Rule 5 draft in December of 1985 requiring him to remain on the Padres roster for the entire 1986 season. Bip would split second base duties in 86 with Tim Flannery with Flannery winning the job by outhitting Bip .280 to .253. For accuracies sake, Bip was sent down to the minors for more seasoning in 1987 and most of 1988 so I believe this jersey to be a spring training jersey from 1987 as no one else wore number 10 for the Padres those years. Benito Santiago wore number 10 in 1986 but then switched to 9 for the next six years of his Padres career. Jersey shows light use and is a great example of the classic Padres style of the 1980’s. Bip would become an All Star second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds in 1992 before being traded back to the Padres the following season. The jersey was originally purchased from Bricol in 1996 and has rested in my collection since.
